The winter of 2026 I created this book. It’s a hardback, 8 and1/2 inch square photo essay. In 1996 I went to work in Los Angeles but kept my home in Sacramento. I drove back to LA, worked 3 weeks and then drove back to Sacramento to visit my son, friends and be home for a week. The drive can be pretty mind-numbing and I began taking the business exits and driving through towns instead of just getting back and forth.
I noticed the loss of small businesses pushed aside by the challenges and changes. I took several thousand photos of businesses whose names reflected ownership, such as Bill’s Stunt Service, Vic’s 24 Hr. Cafe, and Milt’s Coffee Shop.
At my Open Studio 2025, I opened the “card room” which showed 395 photo greeting cards. A friend suggested doing a book. This is the result. The photos were taken before cell phones with a point and shoot camera, only 20 or so were photo-shopped, they remain pretty simple compared to today’s technology.
